While waiting in a checkout line today

While waiting in a checkout line today, a young girl, approximately six years old, pointed at me and inquired of her mother, “Why does that lady have hairy armpits like Daddy?” The mother, visibly embarrassed, turned a deep shade of red and seemed momentarily speechless.

I interjected, “I can provide an answer if you wish. I am not offended at all!” The mother responded, “I apologize, please go ahead!”

Turning to the little girl, I explained, “Every adult, regardless of gender, has hairy armpits. I used to shave, but I came to appreciate my natural body and decided to stop.”

The girl beamed and exclaimed, “Mom, I want to be just like her when I grow up!” The mother then turned to me and said, “I never considered the message I was conveying to my daughter! Thank you so much for this!” She appeared to be on the verge of tears.

This interaction felt quite significant to me and gave me a sense of exhilaration. Upon returning home, I realized the importance of sharing this experience in hopes of encouraging others to accept their natural bodies. It is essential to discuss self-acceptance with your children, as it is one of the most valuable lessons you can impart to them.
